Grizz Kids!!!

January 12, 2010

OK we have made the arrangements for the Grizz Kids program this year. We will start on Tuesday the 19th at 5:30 for the K-5th grade boys and 6:30 for 6-9th grade. The cost will be $50 and includes a shirt, this years shirt is a new design, the same as the high school wrestlers. Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, at the above mentioned times for the age groups. You can register the first day of practice or online at https://www.activityreg.com/REGISTER_PROGRAM.WCS it is tricky to find the links so, from that page click on the 7th link down, County Sports Office then on the left click on register for activities then you select camps and clinics (twice) and there is then on for 2010, select that and below it will bring up a list of activities, scroll down to the C Hills Grizzly Cubs Wrestling. From there is should be easier to follow, just click register and follow the instructions.
Please look for more information coming soon, the schools are working on getting the tournament schedules together, that may effect some practices.
Thanks for your interest and support, we look forward to working with your boys and teaching the to love and have fun participating in wrestling, a sport that teaches confidence, builds character, and rewards based on effort.

Change of Venue

December 9, 2009

I finally received information about this weekends Clash of the Titan tournament.  It has been held at Hunter in the past but only for a couple years, the list I had showed that however it is an Olympus tournament.  We will be at Olympus this weekend for the Clash of the Titans, other teams will include: Maple Mountain, Pine View, Hunter, Murray, Riverton, Skyline, Taylorsville, Hillcrest, West Jordan, Syracuse, and Olympus.  This is a varsity, JV and extra’s tournament so plan on being there!! Bus will leave at 1:15 on Friday and be back by 11, Saturday we leave at 6:15am and return by 6:30.  Please remember we travel as a team, don’t ask to drive home with family.

Last weekend was heart breaking, we were missing several or our varsity guys due to injuries, nationals for another sport, and family events, thier presence was missed as we fell short loosing 4 dual meets at 6 points or less, two were 6 points (a one match swing) and two were only 1 point dual meets!!  This goes to show how much we need these boys to commit 100% to the team, we all depend on them!!

This tournament will be a lot closer and easier for supporters to get to.  I hope you can make it over to support the boys.  Varsity will wrestle at the following times: Friday 4pm v Hunter, 5:30pm v Riverton, and 7pm v Taylorsville.  Then Saturday starting at 10am v Pine View and 11:30 v Murray.  Several region matches against solid teams.  This will be a great tournament for our boys and a chance to prepare for the all important Region Tournament at the end of the year.  Pay attention to these kids we meet they will be who we wrestle at the end of the year to qualify for state!!

Directions to the school can be found here: http://www.mapquest.com/mq/6-9grm Hope to see you there!!

First win, on to Syracuse…

November 29, 2009

Well we won our first dual meet both JV and Varsity.  Varsity was 50-36 over Orem High.  There were a lot of good things that we saw in the boys and some things we need to work on.  We will have a hard week preparing for the Titan Duals in Syracuse this weekend but we look forward to returning to the tournament as the returning champions.  Let’s see if we can repeat last year’s accomplishment!!  I see a lot of determination and desire in these boys so I’m excited to get them into this tournament.

Here are the details, Friday we will be loading the bus at 11:15am, wrestlers will need to come prepared with food for the entire day.  Weigh ins are at 1 and wrestling begins at 3pm.  Rounds continue until 9:30pm with only a 1/2 hour dinner break from 5:30-6pm.  We will arrive back at the school at 10:30pm.   The address is 2000 W 665 S, Syracuse UT 84075.

Saturday we will leave Copper Hills at 7:15am, weigh ins are at 9am, wrestling begins at 10am until 5:30 we will arrive back at Copper Hills at 7pm.  Entrance Fees are as follows for Friday, Saturday, and the whole tournament: Adults $6, $8, $12, Student with ID (k-12) $5, $6, $10, Family (2 adults 4 children) $15, $25, $30, Kids 5 and under, free.

Get your kids rested and ready for this weekend, every eligible kid will get at least 2 matches according to the host of the tournament.  Varsity will wrestle 8 dual meets.  It will be a long hard tournament but a great chance to prove ourselves!  Go Grizzlies!!

Blue v Green

November 20, 2009

It’s hard to believe that the season is on us.  We’ve bee practicing now for 3 weeks and it’s time for our inner squad dual meet.   We will hold the Blue v Green match at Copper Hills in the main Gym at 7pm on Friday the 20th of November.  These will be wrestle off’s for Varsity and JV and also placement after that.  I look forward to seeing where these boys are and what they have learned.  We have covered a lot so it will be good to see it applied in a setting where I can focus on each wrestler and see how they are coming along.  The boys wanted to make sure we held this meet and are excited for it.  I look forward to meeting the parents and thank you for your support and giving us your sons for the next 3 months!

Parent Meeting October 27th at 7pm

October 8, 2009

We have scheduled our preseason parents meeting.  We will be meeting on October 27th at 7pm in the Copper Hills High School Cafeteria.  We are asking that all wrestlers and at least one parent be present at this meeting.  Anyone unable to attend will need to contact me in advance so we can make sure you have all the required information.  This is going to be a fun exciting season for Copper Hills Wrestling and Coach Humphries and I are excited about working with this great group of boys.

A side note and good news for the athletes, the administration has decided that they will not start requiring a physical for each athlete each year this year.  So if your physical is older than a year old but was done for any Copper Hills sport then you are covered.  Starting next year you will need a new one each year.

Hope you are training and preparing for the season!!

Champions get an early start…

September 23, 2009

I received a letter today from a fellow coach back east, he sent this to a lot of people but it’s worth sharing.

Allen,

My father always used to tell me, “T, you have to do what the good guys do even when you don’t feel like it”. Was he ever right. That lesson alone proved to be a valuable asset long after I stopped competing. Whether it comes to business / work related issues or sports, staying focused on your goal(s) needs to be a steady commitment.

Think of it this way, in order to beat your best competition, you can’t let them get too far ahead of you. This could be as simple as drilling once a week (even during football or baseball season). Strength training at school or at the park, even at home. Just by doing a little of something will skyrocket your confidence and help you feel better prepared.

Lately, I’ve noticed a lot of the “GOOD GUYS” chatting openly on my facebook page about how hard they trained TODAY. Many of these guys are returning state champs and state placers like Z. Dailey, L. Stieber, N. Sulzer, S. Stuckart, etc. Granted, they aren’t playing any other sports right now, but that’s not the point. They’re the EARLY BIRDS.

How can you expect to compete with these guys that seem to never stop preparing themselves, especially if you’re in another sport right now ?

DO WHAT THEY DO WHENEVER POSSIBLE WITHOUT ANY EXCUSES !
(and don’t let them get to far ahead)

To add more to this, I good friend of mine, who’s also a strength and conditioning specialist has been visiting the national powerhouse Blair Academy in New Jersey. Blair’s Head Coach, Jeff Buxton invited him to their facility in efforts to better prepare his team (in September) to regain their National Champ status they routinely own. I’d expect Blair to accomplish that goal by simply preparing now for high expectations LATER.

With that said…..

What are you going to do today that will help you accomplish your goal(s) ?

You have plenty of options to choose from. Based on what I’ve done in the past to what I preach everyday to what I’m reading on my Facebook page, the “good guys” are wrestling live, drilling, strength training, running, sprinting, watching film, basically doing what it takes to prepare themselves for better results later.

Keep your dreams alive and do something today that will help you perform better.

Thanks for reading,

– TR

It was fun to meet the wrestlers yesterday and see their excitement for the season. We have a lot of great days in front of us!! There were wrestlers talking about inviting other wrestlers to work out together in preperation for the season, I love to see this kind of commitment!! We can’t coach them yet but they can start preparing now!! I love the question posed “What are you going to do today that will help you accomplish your goal(s) ?” Get out a take a step towards your goal!!
Take Care,
Coach Robins

New year, new season, bright future!!

August 31, 2009

Well school is back in session. I hope the wrestlers are as excited about this season as I am. With the strength we had on the JV team last year, as they move on to varsity and we return several varsity wrestlers we are going to have a competitive team this year!!
Real quick a calander item, on September 15th immeadiately after school we will have a quick team meeting for wrestlers and potential wrestlers, if your in another sport and can just stop in to grab information please do, we will be short and to the point.
What did you do in the off season to prepare for this year? I remember a buddy and me pushing eachother all sumer long with different workouts, from a hard mountain bike ride, lifting weights, home run derby contest, to digging fence post. We turned everything into a competition and we pushed ourselves physically. Year round our focus was wrestling and turning anything and everything we did into training for wrestling.
I hope each of you wrestlers take advantage of the off season and are growing faster and stronger each day. If you are not in a fall sport be sure to plan in advance and set aside time each day to condition and prepare for the season. Everything you do can prepare you to be a champion on the mat. The choice to watch TV can even be turned into an opportunity to see how many pushups you can do in one commercial break. What you choose to eat while watching TV will effect you come November 9th when we hit the mat!
Enjoy the new school year and prepare for a great season. If you would like an off season plan to help you prepare for the wrestling season please let me know and we will build one for you.
Take care and look forward to training with you!!
Coach Allen
